I love a good dressing (stuffing? what do you call it?) as much as the next girl. But sometimes your oven is just tied up with other things… I don’t know… like maybe a turkey. Or sweet potato casserole. Or broccoli with cheese sauce. Or a chicken. Or whatever. And you need another way to make that delicious side dish that is packed full of carbs. So make it in your slow cooker!
This recipe is the one I used for our Classic Celery Dressing. But there are a couple of tips to the cooking, so don’t just toss everything in your slow cooker and walk away! (Click here for the oven version.)
I know it doesn’t seem like it, but you’ll want a 6-quart slow cooker for this recipe. Start with a bag of Pepperidge Farm Herb-Seasoned Stuffing Cubes. And I know, I know. it looks like there is still lots of room in that big slow cooker. But once you add the other ingredients, and the bread cubes start to “fluff up” with the liquid from the broth, you’ll be glad you are using that 6-quart slow cooker!
Next tip – Put a thick layer of paper towels on top of the slow cooker crock, under the lid. The paper towels will catch the condensation that forms on the lid, and keep the dressing from getting soggy. Most slow cookers do “create” some moisture as they cook, so if you leave the paper towels off you’ll most likely end up with really moist stuffing. More power to you if that’s what you want, but I found using the paper towels makes the consistency just about perfect.
Last tip – Stir the dressing once in a while. You’ll put a few pats of butter on the top, and as that melts you’ll want to mix it in. And a lot of the broth you add at the beginning will end up on the bottom, so stirring the dressing occasionally helps to distribute the moisture more evenly.
That’s it! Go, make slow cooker dressing!
Enjoy!
