What’s in My Freezer?

Have you ever opened your freezer to find that package of chicken thighs you forgot about? Or that bread that is so freezer-burned not even the dog will eat it? Or did you buy a bunch of steaks on sale and stick them in the freezer for later… only to forget they were there in the first place? Whoops. (Me, too.)
It is completely normal to have some forgotten food every once in a while. But if you keep a freezer inventory, it will happen a lot less often!
Why Do I Need a Freezer Inventory?
Let’s face it. Sometimes things just get lost in the freezer. You made a double batch of lasagna, but it got buried and you don’t remember it’s there when it’s time to plan meals for the week. You know you hid those cookie dough balls somewhere… but you forget if you labeled them as “brussels sprouts” or “broccoli.” How big was that ham you bought on sale, and do you need to get another one so everyone has enough to eat at Christmas dinner?
Whether we’re getting close to the holidays, busy school nights, or an action-packed summer, keeping a freezer inventory can be handy. A freezer inventory can help you keep track of what pre-made freezer meals you have, what “extra” meats and vegetables you have on hand, and anything else that you might be storing in there. (That last box of Thin Mints, perhaps.)
Better yet, post this freezer inventory sheet right on your freezer, and get reminded of what’s inside without even opening the door!
The most important thing to track on your freezer inventory is how many of each item you have in there – and then update it when you use something out of the freezer or put something else in! Noone wants to find there is no ground beef left, when you’re counting on 2 pounds in there for dinner tomorrow night! And if you already have 5 pounds of ground beef, you certainly don’t need to get any more at the grocery store this week!

My Favorite Meal Planning Tools
Knowing what’s inside your freezer can help you with meal planning, too! Use your freezer inventory to remind you when you have extra soup saved, if there is homemade chicken broth in there, or that there are lots of pork chops because you got a really good deal. This will help make meal planning easier and help you waste less food, which is great for your budget and your time (and your sanity)! It’s a win-win!
