During the holidays, we all come together over food. We are very lucky to live in a time and place when we have access to so much food and the option to make so many food choices.
Thankful for Food
{Referral links are used in this post.}
Whether your tradition is to make everything from scratch, to order in, or to do a combination of from-scratch cooking and pre-prepared cooking, we love food and we love to eat.
When we dust off our old family recipes and gather around the table to talk about what we are thankful for, what comes to mind? Most of us are thankful for our families, our friends, our health, and everything else that is going well for us in our lives.
Me?
I’m thankful for safe, abundant, and inexpensive food.
Thankful for Food Choices
And I’m thankful for all the food choices that are available to us.
We all need to eat, right? How lucky are we that we have so many choices when we go to the grocery store, or the farmer’s market, or the online shop, or the local cafe? How lucky are we that we have so many choices about where to shop for food?!?
I am thankful that I can choose to buy local foods when they are in season in Indiana, and I can still buy strawberries from California (or anywhere else) in January. Strawberries are my son’s favorite, so they are always on our shopping list!
I am thankful that I can buy bananas all year long, because John likes to eat a banana with breakfast every morning, and we don’t grow bananas in Indiana.
I am thankful that I can grow tomatoes and sweet corn in our garden. I’m even more thankful that I can buy fresh fruits and vegetables when my garden doesn’t do so well… or before my garden veggies are ready… or after my garden is done growing.
I’m thankful that all imported food must follow USDA guidelines before it’s allowed in our stores.
I am thankful that I can buy frozen and canned fruits and vegetables so I don’t have to worry about wasting money on food that goes bad before we can eat it.
While our family doesn’t have food allergies, I am thankful that foods are clearly labeled with potential allergens.
Even though no one in our family has Celiac Disease, I am thankful that people with Celiac can easily find and purchase gluten-free foods.
I’m also thankful that there are plenty of foods that are not gluten-free. (I do love gluten and carbs!)
If you choose to purchase foods that do not have genetically modified ingredients, I am thankful that you can find labeled foods. And I’m thankful that so many farmers and food companies take advantage of the benefits of ingredients grown with genetically modified breeding techniques.
I am also thankful that farmers can grow seeds developed with genetically modified breeding techniques if they choose. I’m equally thankful that farmers can choose to grow seeds developed through traditional breeding methods. And I’m thankful that farmers can choose how they want to raise their crops – whether they choose conventional methods or organic methods.
I’m thankful that we can raise beef cattle, and that we can purchase safe and healthy meat at the grocery store.
I’m thankful that all the food available at grocery stores is FDA-inspected and is safe.
