Green beans are one of those veggies that we use as a default. Don’t know what to serve with that? Let’s make some green beans! Need something green to go with that meatloaf? Heat up some green beans! Haven’t had a green vegetable in a few days? Here are some green beans! But, just like anything else, green beans can get boring. This recipe for Easy Garlic Green Beans is easy to make, and it’s anything but boring!

You can use either fresh or frozen green beans for this recipe. If you’re using fresh green beans (which I love to do when they are in season!), wash and break the beans before you get started. I like to snap off a little bit from each end, and then break the beans into bite-size pieces. If you like long beans, then just break the ends off yours.

If you’re using frozen green beans, just take them out of the freezer and toss them in the hot saucepan. They may have to cook a minute or two longer to get the chill off, but they will work just fine in this recipe!

You could use canned green beans, but I recommend sticking to fresh or frozen. The canned green beans will get very soft and mushy in this recipe.

Everything gets cooked in one saucepan for this recipe! I used a 3.5-quart saucepan, and everything fit just perfectly. Start by cooking the garlic in hot oil and butter, then add the green beans, onion, and pepper. Finally, pour enough chicken broth into the saucepan to completely cover the green beans. I used homemade chicken broth. If you have some, use that! (I did need to add a little salt to my finished green beans, because my chicken broth didn’t have much salt in it.)

How Long Does it Take to Cook Green Beans?

For these Easy Garlic Green Beans, start with your saucepan covered. Once the broth comes to a boil, turn the heat down a bit and crack the lid open so the steam can escape. You’ll be cooking these until most of the broth has evaporated (about 15-20 minutes).

That’s it, so simple! We just love the garlic flavor on these green beans, and I know you will, too!

Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound green beans fresh or frozen (If using fresh green beans, clean and trim ends first.)
  • 1 Tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 3 Tablespoons butter
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 teaspoons dried minced onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 2-3 cups chicken broth

Instructions

  • In a large saucepan, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat until butter is melted.
  • Cook the minced garlic in the butter mixture for 2-3 minutes, until garlic starts to brown.

  • Add chicken broth. Use enough broth so the beans are covered.
  • Cover saucepan and bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat to medium-low. Keep the saucepan covered, but leave a vent open for steam to escape. Cook green beans for 15-20 minutes more, until most of the liquid has evaporated.
