Ham steaks are so fast and easy to do on the grill! Unless you buy “fresh” ham (which is more like a beef steak, and isn’t readily available at most grocery stores), the ham steaks you find at the grocery store are already smoked, which means they are “pre-cooked” and all you need to do is heat them up. Seriously, does it get easier than that?
Most ham steaks are “center cut,” which means that there is one nice round bone somewhere in the middle of the ham steak. This is all well and good, but most people want a center cut ham steak, and there is only so much to go around. I found some “not-so-center cut” ham steaks at Dewig Meats (my local meat shop). These taste exactly the same as center cut ham, but there are usually more bones in different places than what you’re used to. But they also usually cost a little bit less, so I say go for it!
This ham is so flavorful that I didn’t add anything to it. I just tossed the ham on the hot grill, flipped it over after about 2-3 minutes, let it cook for another 2-3 minutes, and took it off the grill. (You should be sure to get the internal temperature up to 140-145 degrees F. Check it with this meat thermometer.) The pineapple was the harder part, and even that wasn’t very hard!
I used a pineapple slicer like this one to take the core out of the pineapple without slicing it into rings. Then I just cut the pineapple into thick slices and put those on the grill. I started the pineapple on the top rack of my grill (on indirect heat), but they weren’t cooking quite as fast as the ham. So when the ham was done, I moved the pineapple down to the lower rack for a few quick minutes while the ham was resting. Just watch the pineapple closely on direct heat so it doesn’t burn.
Fresh pineapple is so good… But something about grilling it for a few minutes really brings out the flavors. Little Doc was absolutely adamant before dinner that he did not want his pineapple cooked. But once it came off the grill, he couldn’t get enough! (And if that’s not an endorsement, I don’t know what is!)
If you don’t have fresh pineapple, you can use canned pineapple. Get a thicker sliced variety, if you can, and drain it before you put it on the grill. Watch it closely, especially the thinner slices. If it cooks too long, it will fall apart.
Ready, set? Ham and pineapple! Go!
Enjoy!
