There’s no doubt about it, farm life is pretty amazing! Here are the top five things that I love about farm life, including cows, hay, and raising our family on the farm!
5 Things I Love About Farm Life
{Referral links are used in this post.}
It took a little while for me to get used to farm life. And there was plenty I didn’t know about living on a farm before I moved here! But now that we are here, and we are raising our family here, I absolutely love it! Here are a few of my favorite things about farm life.
1. There are cows outside my bedroom window!
I never – in a million years – thought I would get used to having cows outside my bedroom window, let alone look forward to seeing them every morning! But there is something soothing about seeing the ladies out in the back pasture in the morning and checking them out to make sure they look happy. And watching the calves bouncing around all day long? That’s part of what makes spring so great!
2. The smell of fresh cut hay.
You know that smell of a freshly mown lawn? Now imagine that on the scale of 20 acres (about the size of 2 football fields)… Hay mowing day, and the 2-4 drying days after mowing, smells so good around here!
Come to think of it, the smell of freshly-worked dirt is pretty good, too. Other than our garden, we don’t grow anything that needs the ground to be worked every year. But we live in the middle of a lot of other fields. I love to have all our windows open during hay season and when the farmers are out working the neighboring fields!
3. Living in the middle of nowhere.
And speaking of living in the middle of fields, I love living out here! Our closest neighbor is 1/2 mile away, as the crow flies. And to get there, it’s about a mile drive. While it takes at least 15 minutes to drive to our nearest grocery store, there is something to be said about living on a hill in the middle of nowhere and having privacy without needing curtains!
4. Teaching our son a work ethic.
Farm life is tough. Noone will debate that. There is always fence to be fixed, equipment to repair, or a project to do. Even when it isn’t “farming season,” there is always something to do. Our son is growing up watching us work on the farm, on our off-the-farm jobs, and here at My Fearless Kitchen! He loves to help John on the farm and me in the kitchen. We love how much he loves to help, and that farming is so much fun for him right now!
John and I are both also heavily involved with Indiana Farm Bureau. Joseph is growing up in the Farm Bureau family and goes to many of the Farm Bureau events with us. He is learning, first-hand, how important it is to be involved and give back to organizations that matter.
5. Flexible schedules
Well, for the most part. There are times during hay season that things are absolutely not flexible! When the hay is ready, it’s time to pretty much drop everything to get it cut, dried, baled, and put up to use later. But other than that, with beef cattle things are fairly flexible. We don’t have to worry about milking two or three times a day, we don’t need to worry about planting schedules, and the cows aren’t quite as tied to a schedule as other animals like pigs can be. That means that we can take time to go do fun things with Joseph when there is something interesting going on, even in the middle of the week!
Everybody’s lifestyle has something to celebrate. What do you love most about your life?
Enjoy!
