I don’t know about you, but I’m always looking for easy breakfast ideas. To make it a little bit harder, it needs to be something that my husband, my son, and I all like. It needs to be pretty easy to make. And it needs to not cost an arm and a leg! For us, oatmeal checks off all 4 of those boxes! I love all the flavors that instant oatmeal comes in, but I don’t like spending the extra money on those individual packets. So now I make my own!

These oatmeal packets are so easy to put together. All you need is your ingredients, a few measuring cups and spoons, and some Ziploc bags!

Make it a family adventure! On Sundays, get your kids in the kitchen and make up enough instant oatmeal packets for the week. There are no liquid ingredients, so you don’t have to worry (too much) about spills. Your kids will love helping to scoop out the ingredients and dump them in bags.

PRO TIP: Put all the bags in a tray with a lip. Then, just dump anything that spilled into the trash for super easy clean up! This tray is perfect if you want something simple (they come in lots of different colors). If you want something a little more decorative that you can use for other things, check out this tray, I love it!

Make sure you use quick 1-minute oats (we prefer the Quaker brand). Old-fashioned oats are delicious, but take longer to cook. They won’t work in an instant oatmeal packet.

When we make these oatmeal packets, I usually go a little light on the sugar and spices. We can always add a little more if we need to once it’s made, but it’s hard to take out extra sugar if it’s too sweet!

What are your favorite flavors to put in oatmeal?

Enjoy!

Do you think dry non-fat milk could be added to the packets?

Great question, Suzie! I haven’t tried these packets with dry milk, but it should work just fine! Test it out with one before you make a whole bunch.

This is so simple. I can’t believe I never thought of making these. My son used to go through a ton of oatmeal packets.
