Every spring we say the same thing. “We are going to get the garden in early this year! And we are going to stay on top of the weeds so it doesn’t get out of control!” And every spring the same thing happens… we don’t start planting until late May or June, and the weeds get so crazy so fast we can’t keep up. The good thing about our garden is that we fertilize with composted cow manure from our farm. The bad thing about our garden is that we fertilize with composted cow manure from our farm! That is such great fertilizer… the weeds absolutely love it, and we always need to do some serious weed control.
I love that we can grow sweet corn that is resistant to Roundup, rootworms, and earworms. This means we can mist the corn and the weeds with a weed killer and the weeds will die, but the corn will not. It also means that we don’t need to use any pesticides to keep those ugly worms out of our corn!
The green beans, on the other hand… There are no green beans that are resistant to Roundup. So I need to get in there and hand-weed between these 3 rows of green beans. And I need to do that soon, before the weeds take over and crowd out the beans.
But while I’m out working in the garden, you guys need something to eat! This week’s Easy Meal Plan is a great collection of summertime treats!
