Our calving season has officially started! We are expecting 5 calves in the next month or so. Our first calf was born on Monday, March 6. He wasn’t due until March 11, but 5 days early is not a problem in the cow world! Check out this Facebook Live video I did on Tuesday to see the little boy calf in action.
Calving season is busy for us. We need to keep a close eye on the cows to see when they might be going into labor. Hopefully, everything goes well with the birth, and we just need to check on the calf close up once or twice in their first few days. If any of the calves have problems, my job gets a lot harder – keeping a close eye on the calf, making sure it gets up and nurses (or I give it a bottle if it needs one), and give it antibiotics if it gets an infection (common in newborn calves who don’t nurse well). Meal plans are a big help during calving season, so let’s get right to this week’s meals!
