Some nights, it’s a serious toss up. I love to cook, but I hate to clean up the mess. We love to eat out, but hate to spend the money. So what do you do? Sometimes we flip a coin and do what the coin says. Other times I cook. And sometimes I make knock-offs of items from our favorite menus and get the best of everything! That’s where these Cinnamon Apple Strips come in!

If you live anywhere near me, you’ve probably heard of Taco Tierra. It’s a Princeton legend. As a transplant to this part of the world, I don’t have the same appreciation for it as some of the people who have lived here longer, but I do certainly love their apple strips! One day I though to myself, “Self, you can totally make these at home!” (I’m not the only one who talks to myself like this, am I?)

So I made them at home.

And I’m sharing the recipe with you.

You’re welcome!

And it really couldn’t be much simpler!

I do have a couple of easy tricks to make this recipe fool-proof for you:

  1. Use a pizza cutter to cut flour tortillas into strips.
  2. Place the tortilla strips on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper – no sticking, and super-easy clean up!
  3. Use a silicone brush (like this one) to brush the tortilla strips with butter. Then just toss the brush in your dishwasher.
  4. Use a mix and chop (or a wooden spoon) to break the apples in the apple pie filling into smaller pieces. It’s so simple to do in a saucepan.
  5. Bake the tortilla strips for a minute or two less than you think you need to. They will continue to “crisp up” as they cool.

Do you really want to make it fancy? Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream or some Homemade Whipped Cream! (It’s easier to make homemade whipped cream than you think!)

Enjoy!

Basic food safety says nothing perishable should stay at room temperature for longer than 2 hours. If you need the Cinnamon Apple Strips out longer than that (for a party, for example), I would put them in a small slow cooker on the lowest setting to keep them warm.
