How to Clean Fresh Blackberries

Blackberries can be a little delicate. Washing them too soon before you’re ready to use them can cause some problems. Washing them too aggressively can crush them. Not washing them at all could mean you’re exposed to bacteria. So what’s the best way to wash blackberries?

Cool running water is really all you need to clean blackberries. Only clean as many as you’re planning to use right away. (Any moisture on blackberries can cause them to go bad more quickly.) Place the berries in a colander and run cool water over them. Gently pat them dry with paper towels or a clean kitchen towel. That’s really all you need to do!

If you want to get a little fancier, you can use a berry spinner to dry the berries a little more thoroughly. Choose a spinner with a small basket (like this one from OXO), and don’t spin it as fast as it can go. Spinning too fast can crush the berries. Spinning in a smaller basket and spinning more slowly will keep your delicious blackberries whole.

After spinning, the blackberries may still be a bit damp. Pat them dry with paper towels (I love Viva paper towels) or a clean kitchen towel, or spread them out on paper towels to dry.
