Strawberries get eaten pretty quickly around here – they are our son’s favorite food! But on the rare occasion that they don’t all get eaten in the first hour after I get home from the grocery store, how do I store strawberries at home?
How Do You Keep Strawberries Fresh in the Refrigerator?
The most important thing is that you store strawberries in the refrigerator. Strawberries don’t continue to ripen after they are picked, so don’t leave them on the counter thinking they’ll get a little riper.
Keep strawberries either in their original container, in a vented clamshell container, or in some kind of a “produce saver” container. We like these Rubbermaid Fresh Works Produce Saver containers for fresh fruits and vegetables.
Strawberries should be stored in the high humidity produce drawer – that’s the vegetable drawer. I know, it’s weird to keep fruit in a vegetable drawer. As strawberries get older (if they stick around long enough), they will either get moldy or they’ll dry out and start to shrivel up. Keeping the strawberries in the high humidity drawer will keep them from drying out as quickly.
To keep your strawberries from getting moldy, do not wash them until you’re ready to eat them. It is almost impossible to get strawberries completely dry after you wash them. Any extra moisture will make your strawberries get moldy faster, and nobody wants that!! (Get tips on washing strawberries here.)
If you use these tips, strawberries should stay fresh in your refrigerator for 3-6 days.
