Have you ever seen fancy-looking strawberries at a restaurant and wonder how they do that? It’s really easy to slice strawberries and make them look pretty. As long as you’re starting with fresh, pretty berries, that is! (Get the tips for choosing the perfect berries here.)

Can You Eat the Top of a Strawberry?

Yes, you can! The whole strawberry is edible, including the green leaves. If you like them, and you want to, go right ahead and eat them! If you don’t want to, you don’t have to. (Personally, I don’t eat them, I’m not crazy about the texture or taste.)

How to Cut the Tops Off Strawberries

Cutting the tops of strawberries is pretty simple! You can just slice the tops off with a paring knife, but that might take off a lot of the red, ripe fruit. I tested the straw technique to see if that would work to take the green tops off strawberries. It works… sort of. It was hard to line the straw up quite right. And every time I tried, I always left some of the leaves behind, so I had to try again. I think the bottom part of the strawberry is the best part, and using a straw to pop the top off the strawberry takes off a lot of that bright red bottom of the fruit.

So it works, mostly, but I don’t like this method.

I use a paring knife and cut a “V” in the top of the strawberry to get the green leaves off. That’s it!

How to Slice Strawberries

Once the hull is off the strawberry, it’s easy to slice strawberries with a small knife. In this video, I tried using an egg slice to slice a strawberry. Let’s just say that it didn’t work well. It might work with a different style egg slicer, but it sure didn’t work with mine!

How Do You Cut a Strawberry Into a Heart?

Have you seen cute little strawberry hearts? They look so adorable, and they are perfect for a special occasion, for your kids’ lunches, or just because! To start, cut a “V” in the top of the strawberry to remove the green leaves.

Then, use a paring knife to cut the strawberry into slices. That’s it! It’s so simple, and it’s so adorable. As you can see from the photo below, the two outside strawberry slices are the ones that look the most like hearts, but they all look a little like hearts. Use them all, or snack on the ones that don’t exactly look like hearts!

Here’s another super-simple way to make your strawberries look super-fancy! It’s sort of like this easy tip for slicing onions quickly. Leave the leaves on the strawberry, and slice almost all the way through, without fully cutting through the berry. Then use your fingers to gently spread the slices out into a fan shape. It’s really easy, and it’s the perfect way to fancy up a plate!

Go make those strawberries fancy! And enjoy them while you’re at it!
