I love my slow cooker for cooking up big hunks of meat. But then we end up with a lot of leftovers, and I sometimes have a hard time figuring out what to do with them. One really easy way to manage leftovers is to shred them, but who wants to stand over the counter and pull apart a big beef roast or a whole chicken? Not me!
Enter your electric mixer… With just the regular paddle, you can shred as much meat as you want in just a few minutes!
This will work with chicken, turkey, beef roast, pork roast – anything that you want to be shredded or pulled!
Important Tips:
- This method works best when the meat is still warm. As the meat cools off, it won’t shred, it will just bounce around in the mixer and you will think I was crazy for suggesting this.
- Start by chopping your meat into pieces about the same size.
- Keep an eye on the meat in the mixer. Parts of it will shred quickly, and parts will take a little bit longer. When you see chunks the size you want, stop the mixer and take them out. If you leave small pieces in with the big pieces, they will turn to mush. (And once again, you will think I was crazy for suggesting this.)
If you don’t have a mixer, or don’t want to try using your mixer for this just yet, you can try one of these other tools for shredding meat. These claws are handy, and are fun to use. Pretend you’re a bear and have a good time! I haven’t tried these meat rakes yet, but they’ll give you a little different angle to get to the shredding.

Instructions

- Attach the regular mixer paddle and lower it into the bowl. Don't forget to lock your mixer arm in the down position.
- Turn the mixer on low. Watch carefully as the meat shreds.
- When you see some pieces of meat the size you want, stop the mixer and remove those pieces. Leave bigger pieces in the mixer and turn it back on.
- If you leave the mixer running too long, the meat will turn to mush, instead of nicely shredded pieces.
