Clarabelle – Making Milk and So Much More

By Marybeth Feutz Leave a Comment

It’s time for another book review! This time, I’ve chosen “Clarabelle – Making Milk and So Much More” by Cris Peterson with photos by David R. Lundquist.

Clarabelle cover

“Clarabelle” is recommended by the American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture as an accurate ag book for ages 9 and up.

The story begins talking about where Clarabelle lives. (Sound familiar?)

Clarabelle beginning

We learn about Clarabelle specifically, and dairy cows in general. How they are “big and bony” (that’s how dairy cows are designed!), what they eat, where they live, and what happens to their milk.

We get to meet Sam and Josh, who live on the farm and help out with chores and taking care of newborn calves.

We get to meet Clarabelle’s new calf when she does… how cute is that!

This book gives a great overview of life on a dairy farm – from the barn and stalls, to what the cows eat every day, to how they are milked and how the milk is stored on the farm, even what happens to the manure! (Hint – it’s recycled!)

I really enjoyed this book – the real-life photographs made the story for me! It’s definitely written for a little older child with bigger blocks of text and broader concepts. But most definitely an accurate portrayal of life on a dairy farm!

I hope you enjoy meeting Clarabelle and her friends Sam and Josh. Let me know how you enjoyed this book, and if there are any others you would like me to review.
