Why do I do this?
For this:
And this:
And this:
If you asked me 11 years ago where I pictured myself, I never could have come up with this answer. But I love it.
It’s where my family is.
It’s where my heart is.
It’s where my home is.
Farmer Doc started this cattle farm with his dad. Farmer Doc had shown cattle in 4-H for years. Usually, at the end of a 4-H season, all the cattle are sold and you start fresh next year with new ones. After Farmer Doc’s last year of 4-H, he and his dad kept the cattle and the Feutz Cattle Farm was born! Since then, the farm has grown to more cows, more ground, and more work. But it is all still manageable for our family.
We farm because we love it.
We farm because we have a passion for it.
We farm because we love caring for the land and the animals.
I want Baby Doc to grow up to have a respect for farmers and farming. I want him to understand what goes into growing the food that he eats every day. I want him to see, first-hand, that farmers care about their animals and treat them with respect. And the way that I can do this is to be home with him, on our farm, and teach him a little bit every day.
I get to share my passions with you – here, and on AgriCultured. We get to visit, have a virtual cup of coffee together, and talk about family and farming. I get to meet new people I never would have met before. I have still been learning plenty of new things, even after I finished my “formal” education. Writing for AgriCultured keeps me challenged! My websites are sources to help people (like you!) who have questions about their food find answers. (And if I don’t know the answer, you can be sure that I’ll do my best to find out!)
Life never turns out like we think it will. It is the result of a series of choices we make and circumstances we find ourselves in. The secret is to take what you have and mold it into what you want it to be.
And I have definitely done that.
Farming takes all kinds – men and women; singles and families; crops and animals; the latest technology and a step or two back; conventional and organic; large and small farms. We are all just trying to do what we love, the best way that we know how.
