One Step Forward Two Steps Back

By Marybeth Feutz Leave a Comment

This Martin cat is proving very challenging. It seems like every time we start to make some forward progress, something else happens and he has another back slide.

He got over the little GI bug he got from Leo, and was starting to do a little better. He was acting more normal, hanging out with the other cats, and eating a little bit on his own (although nowhere near enough).

It’s not often we get all four cats on the bed at the same time! (See, I told you I wasn’t making the bed anymore!)

About a week ago, he started having new and different troubles. We think his esophagus is irritated from having the tube in place. He is painful during his feedings, and won’t eat anything on his own at all. He looks pretty pathetic right now.

He obviously doesn’t feel good. He’s not been hanging out with us, or with the other cats. At least he’s not back to hiding under the bed just yet…

So, we’re trying to figure out what exactly is going on, and how we can handle it. For now, we are trying to “rest” his esophagus and give him some medications that should help it to heal. We left the tube in place, but haven’t been feeding him since Tuesday morning. He’ll be okay without food for just a few days while his esophagus tries to heal. If this doesn’t work, we’ll have to take the tube out of his esophagus, and put a different one directly into his stomach instead so we can still feed him while he tries to get better.

Keep your fingers crossed for poor little Martin… we’re getting down to the last straws here… The next couple of days are going to be pretty serious for the little guy.
