So you bought the weird vegetable known as asparagus. You figured out how to pick out the good asparagus spears at the store, and you kept it fresh in your refrigerator. Now you’re ready to eat it! Um… now, what do you do?

Don’t worry, it isn’t as hard as it might look!

First things first, always wash your fruits and vegetables. It doesn’t matter where you got them from, who grew them, if they are organic, or if fairies grew them in magical fairyland. Always wash your fruits and vegetables. For asparagus, that means giving each stalk a good rinse under cool, running water. Lay the rinsed stalks on a clean kitchen towel or paper towels, and pat dry.

Then you need to trim the ends.

We aren’t talking about the leafy, pointy end – that’s the best part! You can use a knife to cut the ends of the asparagus, or you can just break the stalks with your hands. You’ll want to cut or break about 1 inch off the bottom of each asparagus stalk. If you’re breaking them by hand, there is usually a spot where the asparagus “wants” to break – that’s the spot you want! This just gets rid of some of the tougher, drier ends of the asparagus stalks. This part won’t taste quite as good as the rest of the stalk.

That’s it, you’re done! Now your asparagus is ready to chop and saute, roast in the oven, or toss on the grill!

Enjoy!

[…] Rinse intact asparagus spears under running water. Snap off the bottom 1-3 inches of the asparagus spear (they should break easily), and you’re ready to cook them. Find more details about preparing asparagus here. […]
