How To Create a Farm-Themed Nursery

By Marybeth Feutz 2 Comments

We wanted to create a fun nursery for Baby Doc. This project was underway well before he was born, but it didn’t quite get finished until just the other day. Honestly, I’ve been dying to share pictures of this very cute farm-themed nursery for a while, but I wanted to wait until I had it pretty well finished before I did. This is as close as it is going to get for a while, so here it is!

how to create your own farm-themed nursery

I decided to make the walls our focal point, instead of using a lot of bedding and other decorations to get our theme across. So the bed, changing table, and other furniture are all relatively bare, so the focus could be on the fun walls. I used the Farm Animal Mural Wall Stencil Kit from My Wonderful Walls and went to town!

First, I wanted to create a cozy corner where Baby Doc and I could cuddle up to read, have a bottle, and for those middle-of-the-night comfort sessions. I used the sunflower stencils around the rocker-recliner. There is a short parade of sheep under the window. (I still need to hem those curtains so the sheep aren’t hidden.) I had planned to use white curtains, but they let in too much light for daytime naps, so we went with the dark blue instead.

Then the crib. This is going to be the place where Baby Doc spends a lot of time. I wanted it to be a little fun, but I didn’t want to have too much going on here so he would be distracted instead of trying to sleep. I put a small herd of beef cows grazing off in the distance, and some corn behind a fence up close. That “UFO” you see stuck on the wall is our Samsung baby monitor video camera. (This thing has been amazing!)

The focal point of the room is this big barn. When Farmer Doc and I were trying to decide where the barn should go, we were thinking about either above the changing table or above the crib. Because we didn’t want to have too much happening above the crib, we went with the changing table instead. This has worked out great! It gives Baby Doc something to look at during diaper changes. It also has been a great backdrop for Baby Doc’s monthly photo shoots! It’s like a built-in growth chart!

Then we were left with the last wall, with the dresser. Since that dresser takes up so much space, I wanted to go a bit easy with the stencils. I still had a horse and a dairy cow left, so I painted those flanking the dresser. (I also use the dairy cow in our monthly photo shoots. It’s easy to get to, right next to the door.)

Then I added a pig near the floor between the crib and changing table…

…and a family of chickens on the other side of the changing table, behind the door.

There are still a few animal stencils that I haven’t used yet – there is a cat, a mouse, a rooster, a goose, and a rabbit. There are also some flowers that I haven’t used. I was thinking about decorating the bookshelf a little more, but then it filled up with books, and (to be completely honest) I sort of ran out of steam. And I didn’t really want to use the flowers in a boy’s room… it felt a little too girly to me. But maybe that’s just me. 😉 Anyway, I have the stencils and the paint stashed in the basement for sometime later on. You know, when I have time to catch my breath again.

These stencils can be put up in any arrangement, and can be used over and over again. If you really want to go for it, it would be easy to decorate the rest of the room (bedding, curtains, bookshelves, toys) in a farm theme, too.

Be sure to check back later – next week I’ll be giving some stenciling tips, and showing you step-by-step how I painted some of these stencils!
