French toast is one of our favorite breakfasts. But it can be pretty messy to make on the stove. Using a slow cooker is a great way to get breakfast done without making a mess, and still have time to spend with your family!
Apples are one of the most amazing fruits. They are in season all year round, so you don’t have to wait for them to be “ready” – they are always ready! We think of apples as a fall fruit – and they do make some delicious fall dishes! – but they are perfect for any time of the year.
My husband really liked this recipe because of the nuts. If you don’t like pecans, you don’t need to add them. But it does give this French toast recipe just a little extra something.
Tips to Make Slow Cooker Apple-Cinnamon French Toast
The best tip for making this Slow Cooker Apple-Cinnamon French Toast perfectly is to cover the top of your slow cooker with a thick layer of paper towels before you put the lid on. Slow cookers tend to get a lot of condensation on the inside of the lid. This water will collect and drip down onto the top of your French toast, making it soggy. That’s no fun! But if you put a thick layer of paper towels over the French toast, under the lid, the paper towels will soak up all that water. And you won’t be left with soggy French toast!
The other tip is to watch the clock. There is a lot of sugar in this recipe, and the sugar will burn on the edges of the slow cooker if it cooks too long. Start watching your slow cooker around 2-1/2 hours. If the French toast is set in the center, it’s done. (You can use a toothpick or a knife to test the center, just like you would test a cake to see if it is done.) If it isn’t quite done yet, come back in about 15 minutes.
Enjoy!
