Homemade Cat Treats

By Marybeth Feutz 1 Comment

I have seen a bunch of recipes for homemade dog treats. But I had not seen a recipe for homemade cat treats before. (Granted, I hadn’t looked very hard.) When I found this recipe in Gooseberry Patch’s new cookbook, “Garfield… Recipes with Cattitude!” I knew I had to try it!

The recipe itself is pretty easy. Start with one egg and 1-1/2 teaspoons vegetable oil.

start with an egg
Add 2 cans of tuna (drained and flaked).

two cans of tuna
Top it off with 1-1/2 cups of soft bread crumbs.

add breadcrumbs
Using a fork, mix everything together.

This is the hard part. Okay, it’s not really hard… but it sure took a long time… By 1/4-1/2 teaspoon fulls, roll the tuna mixture into little balls and put them on greased baking sheets. (It took me two jelly roll pans.)

Bake them at 350 degrees for 8 minutes. Take them out of the oven, and cool on the baking sheets. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Then feed them to your cats! I will admit, I was a little surprised at the cats who were interested, and the ones who were not. We have four cats. Two of them are traditionally sort of picky eaters, and the other two are definitely not picky. At all.

Turns out, the “picky” eaters loved these treats, and the “I’ll-eat-anything” cats were not interested. Even a little. Go figure.

So, our two picky eaters have a new fun snack that the other two cats don’t get! Who’s the smart cat now?

Your picky eaters obviously have very good taste. 🙂
